Campaigning rules kick in as elections near

Election day in Taiwan falls on November 24 this year. As campaigning enters its final stretch, the Central Election Commission is reminding voters, candidates, and officials about the rules that take effect in the days before an election.

Taiwanese election rules ban the release or sharing of opinion polls as campaigning draws to a close. The ban covers both election day itself and the ten days leading up to it. The election commission on Tuesday issued a reminder that the ban this year will begin midnight Wednesday.

The commission has also reminded the public that all campaigning and assistance to campaigns must stop on election day itself.

This includes online support for campaigns. The head of the commission’s department of legal affairs, Lai Chin-kuang, says that the rules also prohibit attempting to win votes on Facebook or popular messaging apps.
